MORE THAN 50 per cent of working women globally, 600 million, are trapped in insecure jobs without legal protection, according to the first report of the new agency UN Women. The new report called “Progress of the World’s Women: In Pursuit of Justice” has been published by the UN Women Agency.

It is the first report they have released and it highlights the lack of access to justice available to millions of women.

MOVE, stands for Men Overcoming Violence. It aims to help men change. Rather than see a relationship collapse resulting in a family break up  MOVE  facilitates men in a weekly group that involves them taking responsibility for their violence and changing their attitudes and behaviour. As a result the safety and wellbeing of women and their children who are experiencing, or have experienced violence/abuse in an intimate relationship is improved. The programme also offers support to the partners and ex-partners of the men who take part on the programme - women are offered one-to-one support from a trained partner contact worker.

If you'd like to find out more why not contact the Kerry MOVE  programme -

Camara Ireland aims to deliver high quality low cost computers and training to schools, community groups and any other organisations with an education focus that are working with disadvantaged and under resourced communities. The UN Independent Expert on human rights and extreme poverty, Magdalena Sepúlveda was in Ireland in January to examine how Ireland is addressing poverty and social exclusion and promoting Human Rights. Supported by the CWC, the UN Expert visited community projects in Dublin, Galway, Limerick and Longford, as well as meeting with a range of representative organisations to discuss the major issues of concern.

The report acknowledges the difficult situation faced by Ireland but emphasises that the impact of the crisis has been severe, particularly for the most vulnerable segments of Irish society. The UN Expert reminded the State of its continuing obligations to comply with human rights standards and warned that the gains in relation to poverty and social exclusion seen in the past decade could be reversed if those living in poverty and social exclusion are not protected as a matter of priority..

The budgetary cuts in Traveller education are disproportionate compared to financial cutbacks to mainstream education and are not in the best interests of Traveller children. Investment in Traveller education is required in order to safeguard improvements to Traveller education in Ireland.

The Irish Traveller Movement have launched a petition calling on Minister for Education and Skills, Ruairi Quinn, to postpone and review the budgetary cuts that support Travellers in education.
