All babies in Ireland aged from birth up to 12 months, both breastfed and formula fed, are advised to give their baby a daily supplement of 5 micrograms (5μg) of Vitamin D.
This advice comes from the Health Service Executive (HSE), the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) and the Department of Health and Children. Multivitamins are not recommended for babies. Vitamin D only products that are suitable for infants are available from pharmacies. A prescription is not required. The HSE has set up a web page, www.hse.ie/go/vitaminD outlines the suitable vitamin D products for infants that are available in Ireland. An information leaflet for parents and factsheet for health professionals is also available on the site. Claiming our Future has launched a petition to put more women into the Dáil.
Claiming Our Future Alliance wants political parties to take action to ensure more Women Candidates are put forward in future elections as fewer than 1 in 6 women are running in this Election. The Alliance wants the next government to cut some of the €13 million per year of taxpayers money it gives to political parties if they fail to run more women candidates in future. The National Women's Council welcomes this initiative by Claiming our Future, in which it is involved, and urges all of its members and supporters to sign the petition. To sign the petition, go to www.claimingourfuture.ie. Actress Charlene McKenna, who appears in Raw, launched the 2in2u campaign on Valentine's Day. On Valentine's Day, Monday 14th February 2011, Women's Aid launched a ground breaking national public awareness campaign targeting young women experiencing abuse and violence in dating relationships. The 2in2u campaign highlights unhealthy and abusive behaviours in a relationship in the hope that young women, if informed, might get help before the relationship becomes more established, and it has become harder to leave or get support. It also encourages young women to listen to their instincts with its strap line - 'If it feels wrong, it probably is.'
Speaking at the launch Margaret Martin, Director of Women's Aid, explained that, "The 2in2u campaign highlights the way the controlling partner's attention can often be overwhelming at the early stages of the relationship, and encapsulates how it feels to be a young woman experiencing abuse. Again and again, we hear from women living with domestic violence that the signs that her partner was possessive and controlling were there from the start. But to her and those around her, it appeared like he was just so into her." The campaign is backed by Irish actress Charlene McKenna who is currently starring in the RTE Drama, 'Raw'. Speaking in support of the campaign, Charlene said: "I'd just like to say that I was delighted to be asked and that I think it's brilliant to bring awareness of dating abuse to young women as I know, myself included, that it's not something you associate with our age group and yet it is as prevalent as it is with older people." Dating abuse can happen to any young woman and it is important to start talking about what are healthy and unhealthy behaviours in relationships. That is why we launched a new website, www.2in2u.ie, which includes a 'relationship health check' quiz. We hope that young women who are anxious or worried about any aspect of their relationship will contact the Women's Aid National Freephone Helpline 1800 341 900 or talk to someone they trust. The 2in2u campaign is a four week long integrated radio, online, digital and poster advertising campaign targeting young women aged 18-25 years old. Listen to the advertisement and view other campaign materials here. If you or someone you know is affected by dating abuse, visit www.2in2u.ie relationship health check or go to www.womensaid.ie |
