Camara Education-technology to improve education Camara Education is a volunteer-based organisation that uses technology to improve education worldwide. Camara's Social Enterprise model involves taking in used computers from Irish companies and individuals, wiping their hard drives of data, in line with strict International standards, refurbishing and loading them with educational software.Since last year Camara has started to operate in Ireland under the name of Camara Ireland ( www.camaraireland.ie ) with a similar model to that of its parent organisation. Camara Ireland aims to deliver high quality low cost computers and training to schools, community groups and any other organisations with an education focus that are working with disadvantaged and under resourced communities. Initially focusing on the Dublin area, expansion is planned for Cork and Galway, in September 2011.This initiative gives schools and community education centres access to high quality ICT resources and training at a cost that is not prohibitive to the average shrinking budget. The UN Independent Expert on human rights and extreme poverty, Magdalena Sepúlveda was in Ireland in January to examine how Ireland is addressing poverty and social exclusion and promoting Human Rights. Supported by the CWC, the UN Expert visited community projects in Dublin, Galway, Limerick and Longford, as well as meeting with a range of representative organisations to discuss the major issues of concern.
The report acknowledges the difficult situation faced by Ireland but emphasises that the impact of the crisis has been severe, particularly for the most vulnerable segments of Irish society. The UN Expert reminded the State of its continuing obligations to comply with human rights standards and warned that the gains in relation to poverty and social exclusion seen in the past decade could be reversed if those living in poverty and social exclusion are not protected as a matter of priority.. Rape Crisis Network Ireland (RCNI) is delighted to make available our booklets on Victim Impact Statements for both victims and their supporters this Friday 1st April 2011.
RCNI Legal Director, Caroline Counihan said, ‘Victim Impact Statements are an important part of the criminal justice system and they can be of benefit to victims of crime and their loved ones. Last year trained RCNI member advocates accompanied survivors through 24 court cases, spending over a month in courts with victims. Feedback from those clients and from advocates prompted the RCNI to compile these booklets. http://www.activelink.ie/node/5417 |
